So, just what is the Spirit of Christmas, where does it come from, and how can we catch it every year?
In Charles Dickens immortalized story, 'A Christmas Carol', Ebenezer Scrooge says, "I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!"
The Spirit of CHRISTmas began in Bethlehem when shepherds and wise men came to see the Christ child. The gifts presented to the infant were not as important as the gift HE brought to each one of us. Keeping Christ in Christmas will rekindle the Spirit of Christmas flames.
Living in the present can be the biggest deterrent to the Spirit of CHRISTmas - bills, work, that tempting holiday dessert that we've convinced ourselves we shouldn't eat, keeping up with the Jones in getting the best gifts and giving the most gifts.
How can we keep the Spirit of Christmas with all these pressures? What did Scrooge learn from the Ghost of Christmas Present? Take a few moments and ponder what happened to Scrooge during this part of his eventful night. Where did he go, who did he see, what was he privy to? What was Dickens trying to teach us?
Our future is in our children. As parents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors, we can gain a deeply rooted Spirit of CHRISTmas by investing in the youth. More than expensive gifts, children love being loved. Consider your own childhood Christmases - do you remember the gifts or the feelings of hope, joy and love?
Scrooge gives us the key to getting and keeping the Spirit of CHRISTmas when he says, "...I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!" Life gives us all kinds of lessons. What lessons have you been taught and how can they help you create the true Spirit of CHRISTmas?
The Spirit of CHRISTMAS won't happen by chance....give yourself the best gift this year by taking 1/2 hour and writing down what you have been given in your Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
Just for fun...
